"Jump-Start your Quilting" Blog Tour" and Giveaway

How exciting it is for me to have the opportunity to review a quilt out of the new book, "Jump-Start your Quilting".

This book has over 40 projects that uses fat quarters, charm packs, jelly rolls, and 10" layer cakes to give you a head start on quilt projects.  What a great idea!  There are many books out there that use fat quarters or one of the other pre-cuts, but I haven't seen any that use all of them like this one--I love it.  And what a help for those of us who have these wonderful pre-cuts in our stash already and don't know what to do with them.

Besides quilts in this book,  there are placemats, pillows, stockings, table runners and abundant gift ideas.  You will definitely find something you want to make in this book.  One of my daughters has already chosen several she wants for Christmas.   Guess I don't have any excuses about having time for making them.

"Cheerful Blooms and Buttons" is one of the projects that just shouts SPRING to me.  This quilt combines piecing and applique with wonderful embellishments of rickrack and buttons.

The jumbo rickrack, which is so popular  these days, is such an interesting addition.  It makes your eyes dance across the quilt!  Don't you love the whimsical flowers with the darling buttons accenting them.  And the flowers are so unusual, simple but so attractive, just perfect for the the quilt.

The beautiful floral outside border print really pulls the quilt together.  This would make a wonderful wallhanging for someone special--even yourself!

You can purchase this book from Clotilde.

Be sure to check out all these blogs to see some other projects from this book.

Thanks for visiting my blog!  If you have made it this far, I'm giving away a surprise gift (FABRIC) so please leave a comment that tells me whether you like doing applique or not and I'll pick a random number for a winner.  If you post about my end of the tour on your blog, add another comment and you'll get an extra chance!

It took me a lot of years trying to figure out the "A" word, as my friends and I used to call it, as there are so many different ways to do it.  I really like the beautiful needle turned method, but it takes me forever.  So lately I've been appliqueing by machine with a buttonhole stitch, works for me!

Be sure to visit the sites listed above, you'll be glad you did!  And I'll announce my winner when the tour is over.

  3. I enjoy applique very much! It's always a bit of a surprise when the picture really does appear :) I do freezer paper/needle turn, although I always seem to forget to flip the pattern and end up putting freezer paper on top.

  4. I love applique and do all types of it frequently, I think I love the freezer paper method the best :)

  5. I am learning many different ways to applique. Some ways are easier than others and look better. I am not sure if I like it but it is very portable.

  6. I have just recently started both machine and hand applique and am having a lot of fun!

  7. I used to do hand applique, then took a class from Harriet Hargrave and started doing it by machine. I don't do a lot of it, but when I do it really adds to a quilt.

  8. I just recently started doing hand applique. I belong to a group that meets once a month. Some of the more experienced appliquers share their techniques and demo the different ways to applique. This week we had reverse applique, not sure about this methond just yet. So far my favorite has been freezer paper with starch and glueing the pieces in place. Your giveaway book looks very inviting.

  9. I love the look of applique and I do love making applique quilts - they are more time consuming but very much worth the effort. Thanks!

  10. I've not done any applique, but would love to have the opportunity to do it. I'd love to have someone sitting beside me so I can see the step-by-step process. Cool giveaway - thanks for the opportunity of possibly winning. dmj53(at)hotmail(dot)com

  11. I love applique. I am working on a baby quilt right now. It is for my first grandchild.

  12. I love machine applique, mostly with the blanket stitch. I find it very soothing to do. My old arthritic hands just won't do needle turn applique anymore (and I wasn't very good at it to tell the truth!)

  13. Hi! I found your blog through the tour. Applique - something I want to learn how to do both needleturn and by machine and with the fusible stuff. It scares me though. I like handwork while watching evening TV. Thanks for the pleasant surprise. I don't have a blog though.

  14. I love the LOOK of applique but must confess I call it the "A" word...if I NEED to do it, I do it by machine OR I redraft the pattern to piece it. The book looks great!

  15. I am just learning to do some appliqué with wool. I am still afraid of appliqué with fabric. I will get there someday.

  16. I am always drawn to applique quilts...so I must like them best! I have tried several methods and I'm not sure which I like best....right now I have a quilt I'm machine appliquing...but I think I like the cleaner lines of hand applique. There's the rub....time. It's faster by machine and you can get more quilts done!

  17. I am drawn to the beautiful look of appliqué, but don't think I have the patience for it. I usually use the freezer wrap method when I do appliqué but think sewing it by machine looks just as nice and is probably a look quicker. The quilt shown above is very pretty and I like the buttons and rickrack. This looks like a good book to have.

  18. My agenda for this year includes trying applique as I've not done it so far. I think I would like it, if I could just get my sewing area cleared up enough to start another project!

  19. I love to applique but the prep work is what I don't enjoy. I have a weekly bee meeting and I do all of my basting there; the donkey work is less odious when you have company.

  20. Yes, I have done applique and enjoyed the projects takes lots of time a nice passtime.

  21. I do like applique but definately machine done, not a hand applique person at all!!! I do love pre-cuts too so this book looks amazing.

  22. I have tried applique by hand but my method of choice is to do buttonhole stitch by machine. I really like projects that combine applique and piecing like the "Cheerful Blooms" wallhanging that you wrote about. Its beautiful!

  23. I love doing applique, I have just started teaching a small group of ladies at our church to hand applique with one of the freezer paper methods. It's been a long time since I did any and I remember why I enjoy it so much...love to just sit and hand sew for a couple of hours...therapy!

  24. Let me say that applique is a challenge for me. I've done some and was very satisfied with the results, but do not seek it out. Just recently tried machine embroidery applique which I will use in quilt blocks & love that.

  25. Hi Linda,
I am not an applique person- I am a piecer all the way but I do admire other people's applique- I have done a little bit of applique and there are some great stabilizers that can help especially when you do it by machine- Perhaps some day..
Thanks for the opportunity to win such a fun looking book.
    Warmest regards,
    Anna

I enjoy doing applique - it's so versatile! I prefer to use bondaweb and machine stitch as it's so much faster

  30. Hi, I tend to applique by blanket stitch after fusable webbing and pressing folds to give a nice finish. Doesn't work so well with intricate shapes but I am just getting started and learing as I go along. I have done some machine applique with button hole stitch too. It is all about learning for me.

  31. I would love to do applique but am a bit scared by it. I really want to try it.

  32. I used to hate applique, but I'm finding my "flavor" now. I LOVE making an interesting pieced background, then throwing the applique on top. I don't see many others using it, but I LOVE it! So far, I only machine-applique, but when the kids are a bit older I want to try needle turned.

  33. I haven't tried applique, but after seeing the beautiful quilts at the Dallas show yesterday I'm ready to give it a try. Some of the best were great, but very intricate. I really want to learn the different methods. Any suggestions of where tobegin?

  34. My first quilt 6 years ago was a king size applique. It was Spirit of the Northwoods by Debbie Field - a different appliqued scene for every month of the year. Small pieces!!! But it turned out great & I've been appliquing ever since!

  35. I like applique but haven't done much. It still scares me a little, but I don't know why..

  36. I like applique, but seem to always have another project to work on. This book looks like one I'll have to have:)

  38. I DO like doing applique...I'm just not sure how good I am at it! The book looks delightful.

  39. I do like applique. My friend and I finally took a class about 2 years ago as we thought it was too hard too applique. Now we both love that and look at quilt books differently. Before we would just bypass the applique projects. A whole new world has opened up.

  40. I enjoy applique and do both hand-work and machine applique. The book looks like it's full of ideas I'd like to try.

  42. I love to stitch by hand.. I'm working on a hexagon quilt, so I thought why not start an applique quilt it is hand stitching too right? Well I started Floribunda by Erin Russek, and it is a start.. I have only just begun, and it is slow going as I am trying to finish my hexagon quilt as well. I think I will love it thought :)

  48. The "A" word is just that! I've tried applique every which way and will succumb to doing it only when necessary. By hand, it has to be done the back-basted way; by machine, it's with an invisible stitch (my machine doesn't have a blanket stitch). Thanks for your lovely giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I do some of the "A" stuff but not very well. I do keep trying to improve by doing small and simpler projects.

  50. I love the picture on the cover of the book! I do applique and really enjoy it. Unfortunately I don't have time to do as much of it as I would like. Thanks for a chance at your giveaway.

  51. I love hand applique; I've always found that it it is peaceful and calming. I like that I can prepare a block, put everything in a bag or basket, then work on it gradually. Only in the past two years have I gotten really involved with machine patchwork-but I'll always be an appliquer. (And I'm a hand quilter, so I don't produce a large number of quilts in a year!).
Thanks so much for your giveaway for something fun.

  59. I love the look of applique and have always admired people who have mastered still skill. As a self taught quilter this has been an area I have always felt I would need more formal instruction to master. Learning needle turned appliqué is on my quilting bucket list so I'm sure I will get to it some day.
